Chris Cleven was Corps Sgt on this trip --- it was an excellent trip and Chris was in his leadership element. Chris did a great job as interim Corps Sgt over the years...

I only wish I could comment fully! Bennie was a pain in the ass, but we did have some smokin' good times! We worked hard and played hard. God help me, I do miss those days. Then again, with the wife and kids (and me not being a new dick) - things couldn't be better!

The Corps was escorting Prime Minister Harold Wilson off the White House grounds after a visit with Richard Nixon. He later commented in the Washington Post that he loved hearing us play British Grenadiers.

A few other memories of that morning; hanging around waiting to tape that show we were in the ground floor of Macy's along with Helen Reddy, Ben Vereen, and the Kilgore "Rangerettes" whose chaperones were not pleased with many of corps members leering at their young charges. Also I was amazed to watch some lackey change Ed McMahon's (he was doing the commentary) wet socks whilst Ed first lifted one foot then the other.

I still think of Everett often, as I'm sure that many of you do. He was a fine man and a good friend. I still miss him.

That was a fun trip. Jack's right- it WAS a fine drumline, one of the best I've ever seen or heard before or since. Most of we bugle types didn't get into musters, but Sergeant Andy Alvarez let me drive up to that one with my wife and daughter (car overheated in the Baltimore tunnel, but that's another story). Had a great time that weekend.

Still think this is one of the best photos ever taken of the Corps. I had just flunked out of Music School in Little Creek (The "Pool of Mucus"), had auditioned for the Corps and had been accepted. Hadn't seen them perform, so watched my new unit on national TV while sitting in the barracks down in Little Creek. (Oh, if I'd only known.... <grin>)

Andrea and Scott are both right, it was 1986. The picture shown has Ted Kruzckowski as second row center. When in fact, just like Brian Pentony, we were watching the show beers in hand. I remember Randy Hauck getting the fallen espontoon and Woody not talking to anyone for the next few days. Mark Francis' father happened to be there that day with a video camera in hand... and I still have a VHS copy of that show. The label reads......... Woody 1986

I remember this job well. We were supposed to march on and countermarch into position. We lined up in reverse order (for our ripple lines) and when we did NOT countermarch as expected, we ended up in reverse order for the show. Some how, some way, we dreamed up a fix on the spot to get ourselves back in the right order. Needless to say, there was a lot of talking going on in the ranks that day!

This was NOT the year of the flying espontoon. I saw it happen (I was having a beer) and it was not the year of the rims. I was back at Ft Myer that year when Cheez called to tell us to send the rims. We gave them to Jocko that day and they sat in the office for a few days without being mailed. That might have contributed to your 9.999 day restriction. Oops! For some strange reason, I was always having a beer at the Lonestar when crazy stuff happened. Oh, and the funny thing was that Herb Ballangee (Drill team NCOIC) warned Woody repeatadly about the wires. The last thing Woody said was, "What, does he think I look stupid"?

Good catch Kathy. We have often dated our photos based on the whether we were using old or new drums. However, there was a time when the first set of drums went back to be fixed and we pulled the old drums out of the musuem for a month or two. This could have been one of those times.

PIPELINE! How the heck are you! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?????? I don't think you got zapped that day, did you? Or, I could be wrong. Remember the double whammy in taking 8's when Cheez slammed his sticks into the drum and yelled "WAKE UP". I think that might have been Staten Island when both ends of the line started the turn in the same direction. We just stared at each other wondering who screwed what up knowing we were going to die! Everytime I hear that tune, I hear "WAKE UP". Your technique with no stick is as good as most with a stick. did you know that they were looking for Jimmy Hoffa in Michigan. I think they found parts of your Volkswagon! HE HE HE! Hope all is going well. Drop me a line when you get a chance. bpentony@ticom.com

Richard Soistman: I knew your uncle Buck and his wife Marie quite well. Jim Goff, Gene Crain, SGT George Carroll (our instructor)and I made many trips to Buck's shop in Baltimore, MD, particularly during those days when the Fife & Drum Corps was first being formed (1960-1961). Buck, aside from being a surperb field drummer, was a first class craftsman and a noted 18th Century Revolutionary War historian. He personally hand made all the rope tension drums for both the Fife & Drum Corps and the US Army Band, instruments that, I beleive, are still in use today. Buck Soistman was a fine man and a good friend. Gary Mastroleo (CSM-Ret)

It's troubling to me to know Brian's life was an unhappy one and that he's gone...I saw signs of dispair over time and didn't do enough. I regret not having been closer and doing more to help him. Brian always performed 100% in regard to uniform appearance, marching and instrumental proficiency. Although aspects of his life were uncertain, his dedication to the mission of the Corps never waivered. Like a few of us, Brian attended college at night to complete a degree --- in a Corps era when school was considered to be having, "too many outside interests". I will always remember how much he enjoyed taking his courses and how we would swap stories about professors that we shared. I think the happiest I ever saw him was at graduation --- what an accomplishment, he was thrilled and proud. He was a good person and I'm glad I had the opportunity to know him ~ it was too brief.

You would be correct Megan..it was a Bobe Hope Benefit. I spent 45 minutes backstage talking to Don Johnson and had no clue who he was at the time(because Miami Vice had just come out)Lonnie invited everyone to his house on our off day and then they gave us an option of a bus and free tickets to the new Epcot Center at Disney so I went with the group to Disney. I remember juggling fruit at the Fontain Blue Hilton, and talking to a Bellboy who had been there when Jerry Lewis made his movie "The Bellboy"..It was also one of my favorite FDC stories that I still tell today..the buglers went to eat and one of us asked the waitress "What's Quiche?" I won't say who it was..but he pronounced it kuweechee...we all laughed and the waitress keep a straight face as she explained......GOOD TIMES

This picture was definitely taken at the Marquis of Granby Muster in Granby, Conn. in 1979 not 1980. The Muster was to be held in Everett Miners Honor and to my knowledge; it was also suppose to be his birthday. The citizens of Granby wanted to Honor Everett for his contribution to the Marquis of Granby Fife and Drum Corps and for becoming a member of the Elite Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. Unfortunately, as we all know, Everett was killed in an auto accident before this muster, so the muster then became a memorial. The evidence can be seen on the left shoulder of all in the picture. It is a small black velvet sash that we wore in his honor and his absents. I still have mine!

The snare drummer looks like Duane Haffield a little. I'll bet this wasn't a "rehearsal" - why else would Mike Williams be wearing his Class A Jock Strap? I'll bet it's a "Changing of the Hat" ceremony at one of the line companies.

I was first snare on the right. Have Washington Post photo of the drumline from this parade. We used black ebony drumsticks given to us by the maker. We retired them from use after this parade. I was the bugler on the 5th line on the side of the eye. I beleive Rich Lowe was directly in front of me and Scott Proud was in front of him. We played at a lot of musters. Although we never competed, we were always warmly welcomed, and respected. It was always a great feeling to hear the cheers we recieved when we made our grand entrances. I met so many fine people at these musters. That's me, second row on the right end. Personally, I never thought those Sudbury fifes sounded as good as ours, they just didn't project, and have the tone that the Mcdonagh fifes did.

On a second look at this picture, it should be dated somewhere around April, May or June of 1979. James (Jim) Scheddel is in this picture and he didn't arrive at the Corps until January of 1979. In another picture taken by Ross Statham at this same gig, (A picture of "The Wall"), James (Jim) Nuss (aka Dr Doom) is pictured and his ETS was in July of 1979. Since the leaves are on the trees, it suggest this picture was taken in late spring or early summer, but the year was definitly 1979.

I have never sweated (is that a word?) this much on any job in my life! I remember hearing the sweat drip off of my elbow and tap on the drumhead. The tapping went on throughout the speeches. I started to worry when the tapping stopped. I figured once I stopped sweating that it wouldn’t be long before I landed face first on the tarmac. After we marched off, I looked down to see the Remo stamp on my drumhead had been washed away by the sweat. Long black streaks like mascara running down the drumhead. I have never before and never after been on a performance that was as long, hot, and miserable as that. I was grateful to God that I made it through.

ARRRGGG!! Millions of kids running around. Look out, Woodwell! This is an official US Army photo-- they sent an PIO photographer out to shoot this one. I liked the result very much. Shows the crowd, shows us getting ready to do a right wheel. Doesn't show us trying not to step on small children or eggs! The "veterans" had warned us rookies early on about these, but we had several years where we didn't have to go do one. This was my first and only.

This was a pretty hot afternoon-- they used a US Army photographer for this photo (I think) and I wasn't all that impressed with the result. You'd think he could at least had the fifes acting like they're playing and us looking like we're marching-- what can I say? We lined up, they moved us around for about ten minutes, and he snapped a few photos. I think the resulting photo is about as exciting as watching tin cans rust.

Ah, the Australia trip. It was great. We got to take the veterans of Corps I & II. Note that Bennie and John are showing off their Australian "black swan" tatoos! I set us all up one of the last evenings of the trip on the sand dunes by the beach, then had my Canon A-1 (with Kodachrome 64 slide film) set on a tripod with fill-in flash. Set the 10 second timer, then ran around behind and between Bennie and John Moffit in the back of the photo. (You can see me with my big mouth open next to Bennie's swan tatoo.) Australia was a great trip. Campbell Barracks, where we stayed, is home to the Aussie Special Air Services. I made a lifetime buddy in Chris Nally on that trip-- he's been stateside twice to visit. As you can see, we were pretty relaxed and treated our trip to Aussie land more as a vacation than a tough trip! We performed every evening for the tourists and had the day to ourselves. I don't know what was better-- Western Australia or its people. Thanks for posting this photo, "Wookie." Hope all you cool cats are well. Drop me a line sometime.
